Toshiko Takaezu - The Earth In Bloom

Clay Pots
A blue teapot

When they are not tea bowls, they are usually closed, and very often tall and

very valuable, and they often end up in major museums. The "Star Series", is at

the Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI. Their forms feel natural and their surfaces

"feel" undecorated--integrated and whole. Sometimes their carefully undulating

shape allows them to be called "The Three Graces".

The small closed forms are often partially glazed in a unique and brilliant blue.

The surfaces of the large forms in particular, need the hand or paddle to ensure

the maintenance of the desired shape. That mindful attention to the external

form, also gives the ceramic artist the personal link to the inside space that is

required to complete the concrete aesthetic vision.

The earthy tones of the wood fired forms show us their natural sources very

directly, and the large Moon Balls decorate the earth, whether on the ground or

swinging in hammocks between trees.
